Imus was a brakeman in his early days. He also worked as a songwriter and singer at Otis nightclub.

He started his career as a disko-jockey on 28th June 1968 at KUTY in California. Imus also worked at KXOA, a radio station in California. In his radio career, he recorded 3 albums in addition to 2 for the RCA Victor label and a single for the Bang label. Imus was a part of Cleveland radio, to fulfil the role of afternoon drive host on WHK. Imus was on a Nationally syndicated TV talk show, Imus Plus on WNEW-TV by Metromedia.

He was a video jockey for the launch of the VH-1 cable network in the year 1985. Imus raised around $60 million for the Center for the Intrepid, a rehabilitation facility based in Texas, for wounded soldiers in the Iraq war. Imus has also appeared on a radio talk show Keepin' It Real with Al Sharpton. Imus has a long standing rivalry with Howard Stern, when they worked together at WNBC.
