From his biography, Esiason had been born and raised in the city of East Islip in New York. He went to Timber Point Elementary and then attended East Islip high School. This is where he graduated in the year 1979. While in the high school, he was playing in three sports which are baseball, basketball and football. He got the name Boomer at the time he was born. He was constantly kicking into the womb so the mother said that he is Boomer, a nickname he kept up to now.
While in college football, Boomer was at the University of Maryland where he played under Bobby Ross and Jerry Clairborne coaches with an offensive coordinator called Ralph Friedgen. He got two time honorable mention as all-American in the year 1982 up to 1983. In the final home game, he had been able to throw two-third quarter touchdown as passes and he led the comeback victory against North Carolina and the team got the ACC title.
