Early Life and Education
Beth Mowins was born in Syracuse, New York, on the 26th of May 1967. She was born into a family that had a huge passion for sports. Her father Len Mowins, was a basketball coach and her mother was an ardent fan of ice hockey. Beth grew up as the only female in a family of four, where all her siblings were males.
She attended the North Syracuse High School in North Syracuse, New York. While at high school, Beth had a huge passion for sports. Her passion was shared among soccer, basketball and softball. By the time Beth attended college at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, her passion for sports knew no bounds. This passion drove her to zeniths of success. By the time she graduated from Lafayette in 1989, she had captained the varsity basketball team for two seasons. With over 1000 points to her name, and 715 assists, Beth holds the record for the highest number of assists for the Leopards. Beth will then go on to obtain a masters degree from Syracuse University in 1990.
Professional Career
Beth had always had a fascination for broadcasting. As a kid, her most cherished present was a toy microphone, a toy which molded her passion from an early age. Two years after leaving Lafayette, Beth started her career as news and sports director for a New York radio station. Three years later, Beth joined ESPN as a play-by-play commentator. Over a two decade period, Beth's profile has grown by leaps and bounds. Today, she calls NCAA Championships for various sports such as soccer, volleyball, softball and tennis.
Personal Life
Beth has managed to keep her personal life away from the prying eyes of the public. Outside the broadcasting room, Beth maintains a low profile. Aside her public persona, Beth leads a very reclusive life and there are no details of her marital or romantic affairs or whether she was once married or is divorced. If the records are anything to go by, the Betty is currently single.
Honors and achievements
In 2009, Beth was inducted in the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame. Last year, the American sports arena went agog when Beth was announced as ESPN's chosen play-by-play announcer for Monday Night Football. Although, ESPN has had several play-by-play announcers over the years, Beth was the first woman to call a nation-wide televised NFL game, making her the second female play-by-play announcer (after Gayle Sierens), in the history of the NFL regular season.
Beth's feat also marked a huge win for women broadcasters in the United States. Mowins also broke another glass ceiling when she altered CBS's 58 year old tradition to become NFL's play-by-play announcer on CBS; the first female in CBS's half century existence to do the job.
