Being career-oriented and a devoted home-maker can be a very challenging role. It requires patience, persistence and commitment to achieve work-life balance and keep everything that you’ve worked hard for – marriage, family and career, or you’ll end up losing one of those three. Even one of Hollywood's most beloved couple back then, Alison Berns and Howard Allen Stern, faced this difficulty.

How They Started

Their love affair started during their college days at Boston University. Howard was finishing his Communications degree while Alison was taking up her degree in social work. They began working together when Howard asked Alison to appear in a Transcendental Meditation movie that he’s making for his class.

They became closer and finally Howard asked Alison to see a movie about the life of Lenny Bruce. The two suddenly fell for each other and Alison became Howard’s first and only girlfriend in college.

Their Married Life

Many of us wanted our first relationship to be the last. Alison and Howard are no different. They planned for the wedding and finally tied the knots thru a small ceremony held at Temple Ohabei Shalom in Brookline, Massachusetts, on June 4, 1978.

It was 1983 when the husband and wife finally became a family when they were blessed with their first child, Emily Beth. Years came and they were given two more daughters, Debra Jenifer (1986) and Ashley Jade (1993). They were very happy and a very good example of a wonderful family everyone would want to have.

With the kids’ future as their motivation, they did several projects together including U.S. Open Sores, Negligee and Underpants and Private Parts. They served as a role model of couples doing what they love together for the future of their family. However, just like any other relationships, they also had their misunderstandings and challenges which are mostly caused by differences in opinion, personality and priorities.

Irreconcilable Differences

It is true that some relationships that seemed so right end up not working right. A successful marriage requires support from both individuals involved. Being a wife of an American radio and television personality, producer, author, actor, and photographer, Alison knew that she needs to give her full support to Howard’s career and passion so that’s what she’s been doing ever since they started.

Howard started to enter the limelight during his radio show entitled “The Howard Stern Show” which was famous from 1986 to 2005. On the height of Howard’s career, he became workaholic and gave more importance and time for his work rather than his family. Unknowingly, it was when lack of work-life balance started to take over their marriage and family life. As they’re unable to patch things up, they both decided to end their 23 years of marriage thru a divorce in 2001.

Moving On

Failing at something, like marriage, once doesn’t mean that it’s the end for you. There could just be someone more compatible, or maybe it’s just that the entire experience made you realize that you’re meant for someone else. Currently, both of them are already happy with someone else. It was November 23, 2001, when Alison took her second chance in marriage with David Simon while Howard is now with Beth Stern.

Short Biography about Alison Berns

Alison was a North American born in Newton Centre, Newton, Massachusetts, United States on May 26, 1954. With natural brown hair color and hazel eyes, she’s still stunning at the age of 63. She stands 5 feet 6 inches tall. Right now, her net worth is $20 million.

The story of Alison and Howard proves that a successful marriage needs not just love, but a whole lot more of other qualities. Among all of those, acceptance and forgiveness are the most important. As an individual, we make mistakes but we need to make sure that we pick up the lessons, learn from them and live by those lessons to avoid making the same mistakes over and over again.
