Michael Tomlin is a professional American Football Coach. He currently coaches the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team is part of the National Football League (NFL). His popularity peaked when the Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl XLIII in a game against the Arizona Cardinals on February 1,2009. The victory made NFL History as Tomlin was the youngest head coach to guide his team to the ultimate crown in the Super Bowl Championship.

Personal Life

Michael Pettaway Tomlin was born on March 15th 1972 in Hampton, Virginia, in the United States of America. He has an older brother, Eddie Tomlin , who is older to Michael by three years. Michael’s father was a man named Ed Tomlin. Ed himself was a football player in the 1960’s at the Hampton Institute. The Baltimore Colts later drafted him as a player while Ed went onto play for the Canadian Football League, representing the Montreal Alouettes.

Michael’s father died of a heart attack in January 2012, at the age of 63 in Ocala, Florida. Michael barely knew anything about his biological father as he was raised by his stepfather and mother, Leslie and Julia Copeland. Michael’s stepfather, Leslie Copeland worked for the U.S Postal Service as a sorter. Leslie worked at the position for 37 long years.

Tomlin studied at the Denbigh High School located in Newport News,Virginia. After graduating from school in 1990, he went on to attend the College of William and Mary. At college he joined the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. Inspite of being an American citizen he is of African-American ethnicity and since a very young age the world of American Football had a great deal of influence on him.

Michael “Mike” Tomlin is married to college sweetheart Kiya Winston. He met her while he was a student at the College of William & Mary. The couple has three children together. Two of the children are sons, named Micheal Dean Tomlin (b. 2000) , Mason Tomlin (b. 2002), while their third child is a daughter named Quinn Tomlin (b. 2006). The family of five currently live in Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh and they attend the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.

Career

According to his biography, Tomlin began his career part of a second team All-Yankee Conference as a wide receiver in the year 1994. He then began his coaching career in the year 1995 at the Virginia Military Institute as a wide receiver coach. He was then hired by Arkansas State University at 1997 as a coach for the team’s defensive backs. A position which he later continued to hold, but at the University of Cincinnati.

After a series of coaching assignments at various University football teams Tomlin was called in to interview for the vacant head coach post for the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2009, the team won the Super Bowl XLIII and that made Tomlin the youngest ever head coach in the NFL history to guide his team to win the championship.

Tomlin’s extremely successful career as a coach enables him to draw a salary of 2.5 million USD in his role as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers and his net worth is around 16 million USD.
