Smith was born in the city of New York City in Bronx Borough. He got raised in Hollis section in the Queens. He is a second last of the six children. He grew up with four older sister with one younger brother called Basil and died because of car accident in the year 1992. From his father, he has a half brother. His parents originated from Saint Thomas in US Virgin Islands. The father was a manager for a hardware store. The maternal grandmother is white but other family members are black. He finished his schooling at Thomas Edison high school found in queens.
