Richard Belzer is a famous American actor, comedian and author who originally worked as standup comedian for Saturday Night Live in 1975. He was extremely famous for his role of Detective John Munch and has played this for 23 years in the web series Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Personal Life
Richard was born in 1944 at Bridgeport, Connecticut and grew up in a Jewish family. After finishing studies from Fairfield Warde High School, he went to the Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts but was expelled from too. He had initially worked as a reporter in the Bridgeport Post and had later on taken up lots of other jobs.
He had a very traumatic childhood where his mother Frances used to beat them and she died due to breast cancer when he was 18. When Richard was 22, their father Charles had committed suicide which disturbed him a lot as a youngster.
His marriage to his first two wives were short lived but since he married Harlee McBride in 1985, they are together ever since. Richard successfully battled testicular cancer in 1983. In 1985, when Hulk Hogan came to his talk show and tried to show a wrestling move, his demonstration had left Richard hurt and unconscious, but they settled it out of court for $5 million. However, his elder brothers’ untimely suicide just like their father in 2014 left him shocked.
Career
Richard worked as the opening comedian for Saturday Night Live Show in 1985 and worked in a few films after that. However, one of his best roles has been detective John Munch as a regular cast in Homicide: Life on the Street and also in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and he worked there for around 23 years.
He has also written 4 books which have described the conspiracy theories as he strongly believes that President John F Kennedy was murder due to a conspiracy made against him. Some of his notable contributions towards films were those like Fame, Café Flesh, Night Shift and Scarface. Belzer also appeared for the cover of a music album by Billy Joel. Also he has worked in a guest role as John Munch in other series like the X Files, The Wire, and The Beat etc.
Richard has an avid love for dogs and he advocates rescuing street dogs and also gathers charity for them. Both he and his wife also vehemently protest against the gun violence in the US. He has a net worth of $16 million and if his biography is ever made it would interestingly contain that when he does not work in the US he stays with his terrier Bebe in South France and is fluent in French.
