DeAndre Edoneille Ayton was born on July 23, 1998 in Nassau, The Bahamas. Ayton was born in a group of five. Deandre was found at a young camp and tagged as a future great player. His family moved to Phoenix where he joined Hillcrest, a private academy known as a top basketball development school for his junior and senior years.
He went to Balboa City School in San Diego, California and started on the varsity basketball crew for a long time. He was a sophomore in the 2014–15 season, drove Balboa to a 17-14 record, averaging 21 points, 16 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game.
Ayton made his debut with the University of Arizona on November 10, 2017, recording 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks in a 101–67 win over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. Ayton's 19 points was the seventh most for a Freshman in an Arizona debut. On December 9, 2017, he recorded what was, at the time, a season-high 29 points and 18 rebounds in a 88–82 win over the Alabama Crimson Tide.
