In 1991, Porter was cast in the stage troupe of Miss Saigon, which won three Tony Awards and ended up one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history. All through the 1990s, he kept on appearing in Broadway musicals, including Five Guys Named Moe, Smokey Joe's Café, and the 1994 stage version of Grease, wherein he played Teen Angel. Porter pursued a career in the music business, winning the 1992 talent show, Star Search and discharging a self-titled R&B collection in 1997 with A&M Records. Starting in 2000, he took a break from acting on Broadway to coordinate productions like the music revue Being Alive at the Suzanne Roberts Theater in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Los Angeles production of Once on This Island, and a version of George C. Wolfe's play, The Colored Museum. Porter wrote the independent performance piece Ghetto Superstar, which he appeared in 2005 at New York City's Public Theater. Porter proceeded to appear in the Pittsburgh debut of Suzan-Lori Parks' Topdog/Underdog, just as in the off-Broadway recovery of Angels in America at the Signature Theater in New York City in 2010, where he played Belize.
In 2018, Porter turned into a series normal in the network show Pose, and appeared on various episodes of American Horror Story: Apocalypse. He was a supporter of the Ali Forney Center, a public venue for destitute LGBT youth in New York City.
In September 2019, at the 2019 Emmy Awards show, Porter was nominated for and won the Lead Actor in a Drama Series award because of his performance in Pose.
A proud gay man, Porter got married to his long-lasting beau Adam Smith in January 2017. The two traded Cartier wedding rings in a little function at a companion's Chelsea penthouse apartment. The couple got engaged on December 29, 2016, after Porter popped the wedding inquiry while the two were in London. Billy and the co-proprietor of eyewear organization Native Ken initially met in 2009. They at that point dated for a year before separating, yet rejoined together in 2015.
